Synopsis from Goodreads

From New York Times Bestselling Author, Kristen Proby, comes an all-new paranormal romance set in the mystical city of New Orleans…

I am never alone. Not even when I am alone.
I see the unquiet dead, the souls that wander through the French Quarter.
They can’t move on, and I can’t stop seeing them.
I wear malachite for protection, and I control what I let in. It’s the only way to stay sane. Everything changes the day Cassian Winslow joins my ghost walking tour and knocks my world off its axis with green eyes the color of the stone around my neck.
An unspeakable evil is loose in New Orleans, taking young women and leaving a bloodbath in his wake. More shadows lurking for me. More unhappy dead. There might be a way to stop it.
Open myself up to Cassian.
If I do, it could spell his death.
But if I don’t, it’s mine.

Prepare yourself, Shadows takes you on a journey where beliefs are tested, the tension is nail-biting and the romance soul-searing. If you think you are ready, think again!!!

Brielle and her sisters have struggled with their gifts for as long as they can remember. Living in the Bayou surrounded by spirits and at the mercy of abusive, neglectful parents – to say they have not had it easy would be an understatement. As soon as she was old enough, Brielle left the house of horrors and rescued her sisters in the process. From there they were able to develop the gifts they had been born with and create a future for themselves. However, it would seem the past and the sins of the parents are intent on keeping the sisters from finding happiness.

The serial killer element within the plot was truly disturbing, especially with the chapter headings featuring actual quotes from real-life serial killers *shudders* The raw fear of the victims permeated from the pages.

The unique history of New Orleans was cleverly woven into the story and while making the hairs on my arms stand on end, it also made me want to dig deeper and find out more about the places and people mentioned within Shadows.

The inclusion of characters from the Boudreaux series added depth to the story and the characters themselves.

Shadows is so much more than simply a paranormal romantic suspence story, the character development is an intriguing part of the plot as a whole; showing the acceptance of the gifts they have been given is a fundamental part in the sisters accepting themselves and learning to be comfortable with who they are.

There are indications within the narrative of more to come as well as hints as to some sort of prophecy coinciding with the discovery of soul-mates for each of the sisters. Shadows is a fantastic start to the series, one I am desperate to continue reading.
