Synopsis from Goodreads
My name is Courtney Jane Salinger…
and I’m sick of games.
Sick of the Friday night bar-scene-cum-meat-market.
Sick of the boy-girl, man-woman, mars-venus, flirtation-without-expectation, game-playing nonsense.
Sick of awful dates and one-night stands, booty calls and guys who don’t call back, mixed messages or NO messages and—and—and…I’m sick of all of it.
I just can’t do it anymore.
It’s too hard, and worse: little by little, it’s making me hard.
It’s breaking my heart.
What do I want?
I want a house in suburbia with a white picket fence.
I want babies to buckle into a minivan.
But most of all, I want to be married.
I want a husband.
So I’ve made an important decision: I’m making my escape from the dating world and the single life.
I’ve filled out my application on ArrangeMe.com and I’m putting my fate into the hands of experts.
Is it a little scary?
I mean, I have no idea who I’ll end up with.
After all, I’m planning to marry a complete stranger.
But between you and me?
I can’t wait.
Being arranged can’t possibly be worse than being single.
Arrange Me provides a completely unique insight into dating, marriage and relationships. It’s a thought-provoking look at the world of commitment, how do you know when a relationship is right, when is the best time to move through the stages of a relationship and what happens to all the time you have invested in the relationship doesn’t work out?
Courtney is looking for her happily ever after but with little success. The soul-destroying dates she has been on have her looking for an alternative; that alternative stems from her best friend, who just happens to be Indian and whose parents had an arranged marriage. It would seem fate has a hand in Courtney’s preoccupation with an arranged marriage as she happens upon an advert whereby a team of experts conveniently match you with your partner and arrange to marry on the day you meet.
Katy does an amazing job of balancing the scales in the debate between an organic relationship and an arranged one; ultimately there are no guarantees in life, there is no assurance that whether a relationship is arranged or not that it will thrive.
Josh is the cute and flirty bartender at Courtney’s Friday night after work watering hole, although Josh has never flirted with Courtney. Bartender by night, playwright by day, Josh is a classic brooding, struggling artist with his focus solely focused on his career. That is until Courtney blurts out her plans for an arranged marriage. Following that little bombshell, it would seem that Josh just can’t stop thinking about Courtney and the chemistry just seems to spark up between them like magic. It would seem that by Courtney making herself unavailable was the way in which Josh would notice her. Don’t get me wrong I did like Josh but his sudden interest in Courtney after knowing her for 2 years, kinda made me want to slap him.
Josh is a little bit old-fashioned in his belief that the man in the relationship should be the provider, especially as Courtney is on the opposite end of the economic scale to Josh.
I do think Josh and Courtney belong together, however, there are a lot of issues they need to work through in order for them to achieve a fulfilling relationship. Especially as both of their careers are of top priority to them. You know the saying:
Act in Haste, Repent at LeisureDavid foster wallace
would certainly seem to apply in this instance. Especially when Katy throws in an extra curveball at the end of Arrange Me, just to torture the reader a little bit further 😜
