Synopsis from Goodreads
When Ethan Bishop returns to the Hudson Valley, his body and spirit are a little worse for wear. As a former Special Forces paratrooper, he saw his fair share of conflict, and he came home with wounds, inside and out. At his sisters’ B & B and farm, he can keep all his pain at a safe distance. But quiet time isn’t easy when a fiery woman explodes into his life…
It’s business—not pleasure—that brings Manhattan PR agent Mia Thrush reluctantly to the farm. Tightly wound and quick-tempered, Mia clashes immediately with the brooding Ethan. Everything about him is irritating—from his lean muscles and piercing blue eyes to his scent of sweat and musk.
But as the summer unfolds and temperatures rise, Ethan and Mia discover how much they have in common: their guarded histories, an uncontrollable desire, and a passion for the future that could heal two broken hearts. But will their pasts threaten their fragile chance at a brand-new future?
Jennifer Probst has an uncanny knack for bringing the characters to bright, vibrant life within her books. As well as her wonderful and often comedic use of animals within the narrative, from abused horses to a chicken who thinks he is a dog 😍 But most importantly Jennifer shows the healing power of working/being with animals and how they can help soothe even the most troubled of souls 💞
Ethan and Mia couldn’t be more opposite if they tried; although there is a lot going on below the surface neither is aware of, they are both quick to judge the other on their initial (unfavourable) encounter.
Ethan is ex-military, a severe injury turning his whole world upside down and leaving him to re-evaluate his life. Returning to his hometown and family ranch in order to gain some perspective on his new path in life. Compassionate to the core, gorgeous and loyal, Ethan struggles to see his own worth following his last mission and subsequent injury.
Mia is a high powered PR person with a gift of being able to spot lies (wow I would love that ability!!!) Unfortunately, this has hampered her personal life and left her with feelings of inadequacy. Driven into the PR world following her families dealings with the media when she was a teen; Mia is determined to only represent those she deems as honest and worthy of the position they are seeking. Which is how she ends up chaperoning the daughter of the candidate for NYC Mayor she is working with. Guess where she is sent to act as guardian!!!! You got it – the same ranch Ethan is now in residence at.
While their initial encounters create tension between Mia and Ethan, it is as if their clashes fuel the simmering attraction between them. Mia is sassy with a side of snark, but underneath it all, she is the most caring, wonderful person who treasures helping people. Ethan may be a bit rough around the edges having to deal with PTSD including nightmares and panic attacks but he has a delicious romantic side that shows an appearance only for Mia 😍
There is so much going on within the pages of The Start of Something Good – from the background details of the main players, the quirky peripheral characters that are sure to create an abundance of giggles to teenage angst and small-town camaraderie. You really don’t want to miss the smallest detail, with the rich descriptions you are immersed into the daily life at the ranch as if you were truly there. Jennifer writes the places we would all like to live in an ideal world.
I have already fallen in love with Ethan’s sister Ophelia and cannot wait to get more of her story in A Brand New Ending
