Synopsis from Goodreads

Caine McKannon is all about rules. As the Raven Riders Sergeant-at-Arms, he prizes loyalty to his brothers and protection of his club. As a man, he takes pleasure wherever he can get it but allows no one close—because distance is the only way to ensure people can’t hurt you. And he’s had enough pain for a lifetime.

And then he rescues a beautiful woman from an attack.

Kids and school are kindergarten teacher Emma Kerry’s whole life, so she’s stunned to realize she has an enemy—and even more surprised to find a protector in the intimidating man who saved her. Tall, dark, and tattooed, Caine is unlike any man Emma’s ever known, and she’s as uncertain of him as she is attracted. As the danger escalates, Caine is in her house more and more – until one night of passion lands him in her bed.

But breaking the rules comes at a price, forcing Caine to fight dirty to earn a chance at love.

Caine has always been a brooding presence in the background of the Raven Riders. He intentionally doesn’t draw attention to himself and keeps everyone at a distance, even his brothers-in-arms, and that is just the way he likes it although his crippling loneliness would suggest otherwise.

Caine is a protector at heart; even after the terrible suffering he endured as a child and young adult has done nothing to tame his white-knight syndrome. As Caine’s past is revealed it is painfully clear how the trauma of his past is preventing him from truly living; the tainted view he has of himself is another barrier to happiness for Caine. He is ultimately terrified that if he lets someone get close to him they will find his faults, my heart broke for him with each new discovery.

Caine stumbles upon a mugging one evening where he comes to the aid of the lovely Emma. Marking a turning point in both of their lives.

Emma has an inner light that draws people to her including Caine. It is soon apparent that this is not always a good thing when Emma finds herself with a stalker, as well as a protector in Caine. Emma is inexplicably affected by Caine on an emotional and physical level, with whom she can let out a side of herself she has been unable to show anyone else.

Through their time spent together, Emma is able to break down Caine’s barriers brick by brick, giving him a life he deserves rather than the existence he had condemned himself to. The added complication of Emma’s stalker adds to the tension within the story and brings Emma and Caine closer together. I have to say I did guess the perpetrator, so the clues are in the narrative for you to pick out 😉

Laura completes Caine and Emma’s story by giving us a glimpse into their future so there are no loose ends in the series ♥
