Synopsis from Goodreads
A former Marine and Las Vegas vice cop, Nathan Fox has seen it all and then some. Heading up security for the Onyx Casino is tame compared to his dark past, but it’s not his only job. Working for the Reliance Group is his real passion project. His current case: a missing woman. His mission: to find her. Easy enough, until he finds himself tangled up with sexy Nicole Hutton, a stubborn—and stunning—journalist who’s nosed her way into his investigation . . . and into his dirty, erotic fantasies.
Resisting Nicole is impossible, and he soon discovers that in this dangerous high stakes game of chance, falling in love is the greatest risk of all.
Game of Chance is a fast paced, action packed romantic suspense where the the characters have to confront their personal demons in order to help save young lives.
Nathan is haunted by the one case that took away not only his belief in justice but also caused him to leave his police career and lose part of himself along with his fiancee in the process. Now working as a head of security for Onyx Casino, Nathan also carries out special missions for the clandestine (but good) group (The Reliance Group) he works for. When a runaway teenage girl gets lured into a predators depraved world, Nathan is sent undercover to rescue her, knowing it will be a trigger for the monsters that haunt his peace.
Game of Chance deals with the seedy underbelly we wish were not present in today’s society – paedophilia, drugs, grooming, the sex trade and human traffic all play a role within the plot. It was frightening to imagine naive young girls being lured into the clutches of such depraved individuals and the warped view they have of their situations. Brain washing at it’s most formidable.
Nicole has dreams of being an investigative journalist and making a difference with the stories she gets to uncover; however, her reality is a long way from her dreams. Stuck in a rut reporting on fluff pieces, Nicole crosses paths with Nathan at a speed dating event he was coerced into attending. Sparks fly leading to what was supposed to be a no-strings-attached night but when Nicole discovers the case Nathan is working on she inserts herself into the operation.
Dealing with the vile individuals who exhort their degrading manipulations on naive young women brings back painful memories of her own past, where Nicole faced a very similar situation. The bond she feels to the young women caught in the trap of conditional affection makes Nicole determined to expose the miscreants and save the girls along the way. However, her personal connection makes her a little volatile, compromising the original mission.
Game of Chance is utterly compelling, as a reader I was willing Nathan and Nicole to succeed in bringing down the evil they had to enter and overcome their painful pasts.
Nathan and Nicole were stronger together, providing the quiet support they both needed but didn’t know how to obtain. The comfort they provided each other instinctively allowed them both to move forward with their lives.
The cast of characters within The Reliance Group have been laid out within the pages of Game of Chance, each one having a story of their own to uncover. I am looking forward to getting to know more about them and hopefully, getting to see Nathan and Nicole again.
