Synopsis from Goodreads
Factory mechanic Duke Crawford just wants to watch SportsCenter in peace. Unfortunately, living with four divorcee sisters doesn’t provide much silence, nor does it change his stance on relationships. But when a fellow commitment-phobe stumbles into his life, getting him good and worked up, he can’t deny his protective instincts.
Samantha Waverly’s brother just put her in an impossible situation. The only way out? Marry huge, gruff, gladiator look-alike Duke—for show, of course. She doesn’t make promises—she knows too well how easily they can be broken—and this is no exception.
As the blistering attraction between them grows, the lines around the no-strings relationship blur. But Duke and Samantha’s marriage is only for show…or is it?
Worked Up has the most adorable, quirky characters you can’t help but fall in love with. This is my first book in the Made in Jersey series, you can bet I am going to be hitting the first two books in the series as soon as I can.
At first, it would seem as if Samantha and Duke are complete opposites apart from both having issues with relationships. However, they can’t help being drawn to each other in spite of their reservations.
Sam, a children’s book illustrator, is escaping an agreement she made with her step-brother in order to see her dream career take fruition. Sam doesn’t take breaking commitments lightly especially when her dreams are at risk, her attempts to resolve the problem lead her straight into Duke’s path.
Duke is happy with his life, as long as he gets peace to watch Sports Center he is content. Taking care of his four sisters while they re-establish themselves following the demise of each of their marriages. Duke is the ultimate caregiver, even if he doesn’t realize it himself. When you are surrounded by failed relationships it is quite easy to become pessimistic and unable to believe there may be good relationships to be had with the right person. All of Duke’s usual rules fly out of the window when he sets eyes on Sam. There is something about her that brings out all of his over the top alpha tendencies, his inner thoughts made me giggle as much as they made me swoon.
They cannot deny the sparks between them, especially as they come to an arrangement to help Sam still achieve her career goals. What starts as an arrangement soon escalates to something much deeper, if only they can overcome their emotional barriers to make it last ? Placing their trust and emotional wellbeing in another person is something they both struggle with, the reasons behind their barriers made my heart squeeze in my chest, especially Samantha’s.
Sam is utterly adorable and quirky, she is very perceptive almost to the point of saying she had a sixth sense where others were concerned. Her over-active imagination is the stuff of storybooks. I would love to see some of her illustrations from the story to enhance the experience even more.
Worked Up is a fast paced story to go along with the accelerated nature of the relationship within the narrative, but it truly is the characters that make it so deliciously swoon-worthy.
