Synopsis from Goodreads
Tucked away at the base of the Rocky Mountains lived a little boy with one singular dream: leave this broken and battered home and become someone.
Be somebody’s hero.
That boy was me—Colby Brooks. Except I’m not that same little boy anymore.
My dreams might still be the same, but my reality isn’t.
I’m smarter. Stronger. A man.
And I learned a long damn time ago, the only way to achieve my dreams was to avoid distractions—at any cost.
Focus. Resolve. Determination.
But all it took was one single night. One night and my entire life…changed.
One night had me colliding head first with the biggest distraction of my life; Rory Oaks.
Smart. Charming. Beautiful.
Rory changed everything.
Quickly, my one-track mind started to bend.
Each kiss faded decade-long dreams.
And with one single incident, I fly off course.
Oh, Colby, my heart hurts for all you have suffered and the painful isolation you have forced on yourself as a result. A force of will and sheer determination to succeed are the forces that drive you forward but at what cost, socially awkward and an overwhelming need for control act as further barriers to forming emotional connections.
Rory is the opposite of Colby, confident and outgoing, to be completely honest I didn’t really like her, I felt as if she had an ulterior motive to her actions which made me suspicious of her every move in the beginning. Although Rory’s selflessness where her family was concerned helped to build a connection to her.
Despite their differences Rory and Colby both feel an instant connection, something profound yet unexplainable. I adored the use of letters within the narrative allowing both characters the freedom of expression without sensor, allowing them time to self-reflect as well as adjusting to the revelations they each divulge.
There is a lot of emotional upheaval within The Upside of Falling while love is important and can create contentment in your life, following your dreams and creating your own path is equally as important. A full well-rounded life, which neither Rory nor Colby can achieve without the loss of the other things that are important to them.
My heart broke for Colby far more than Rory, as Colby clung to hope like a lifeline while pursuing a future his father and grandfather would be proud of. There is a major twist at the end of The Upside of Falling which calls all of Rory’s feelings and faith into question!!! I cannot wait for the truth to be revealed and insight into the change in circumstances!!!!
