Synopsis from Goodreads
Mainer Farms is steeped in family history, but it’s also deep in debt from the effects of the ever-changing farming industry. Not about to let his family’s legacy go under, Colt Mancinkus is willing to do anything he can to save the farm.
Darby Culhane is the new farmer in Whynot, North Carolina, and she’s proving to be quite the forbidden temptation for Colt. Darby isn’t looking for anything but a fresh start, and she’s got it all figured out. Get settled in? Check. Apply for the rural county grant? Check. Confrontation with the steaming mad, smoking hot local farmer? Well, that wasn’t on the agenda.
As pretty as she is sweet, Colt can’t help but be drawn to Darby’s…peaches. No really, she’s a peach farmer. Get that mind out of the gutter, and get on down to the farm to see what happens when circumstances force Colt and Darby to team up. They may just find that the peach trees aren’t the only things in bloom.
Pretty as a Peach is the ultimate in slow burn romance. Darby and Colt have a rocky start when they both apply for the same grant in order to enhance their respective businesses, however, Colt’s need is far greater than Darby’s making him less than sympathetic to the gorgeous newcomer.
Colt is determined not to like Darby despite his physical attraction to her. His plans to keep her at a distance quickly evaporate as he gets to know the amazing person she is, beautiful inside and out. Colt is also surprised by how much they have in common considering their very different lifestyles before Darby moved to WhyNot.
For her part, Darby tries to maintain her distance from Colt because of the attraction she feels toward him. Fresh off a bitter separation and dealing with a resentful daughter while trying to set-up her peach farm and finish her master’s degree ensures Darby is kept very busy, but not busy enough to avoid forming a bond with Colt.
Despite their hectic lifestyles, Colt and Darby manage to spend quality time together building on their basis of companionship and emotional support. I especially liked how Colt was able to break down the barriers with Darby’s daughter, Linnie, helping the youngster adjust to not only the move but also to the separation of her parents.
Obviously Darby’s separation and bitter battle for divorce comes at a cost, especially as her ex is conniving and vengeful after losing what he considers his prize possession. Creating problems not only for Colt and Darby but also having a ripple effect on the Mankincus family and the town of WhyNot.
I love the Mankincus family and their tight-knit relationship, I adore the way they absorb people into their fold and treat them like family. I especially love the way in which the people of WhyNot pull together to help each other out, it is heartwarming to believe this could occur in real life. Supporting and comforting each other through good times and bad – with a touch of gossip mill thrown in 🙂
Juliette cleverly progresses the previous characters relationships within Pretty as a Peach as well as setting a path for the next sibling, Larkin, to find her own HEA in Gimme Me Some Sugar.
