Synopsis from Goodreads

***He wants a second chance. I want a divorce. To get what I want, I’ll have to give him what he does.***

From New York Times & USA Today bestselling author, Nicole Williams:

The only benefit I want from my ex is a divorce.

We got married for all the wrong reasons. The one thing we got right was our separation. I should have known better than to think I could bet on forever with a guy like Canaan Ford. Everything about him screamed impermanent, from his wild eyes to his restless soul.

When I left him and the small town I’d spent my whole life in, I swore I’d never go back. Never only turned out to be five years. Canaan claims he’s changed, but he hasn’t—same knowing smile, same rough demeanor, same body crafted from sin and sinew. And yet, something is different. He thinks this is his chance for redemption. My disagreement comes in the form of divorce papers dropped in his lap. He refuses to sign them. Unless . . .

He wants a month to prove himself to me—that’s his offer. One month to make me fall in love with him again and if I don’t, he’ll sign the papers. As much as I want to say no, I agree. I can suffer my ex for a short amount of time if that’s what it takes to be free of him once and for all. I fell for him once; I won’t make that same mistake twice.

He says we’re not over. I say we were over before we got started. Only one of us can be right, and I can’t let it be him.

Exes with Benefits has a definite Sweet Home Alabama vibe to it, luckily it is one of my favourite movies.

Maggie and Canaan were hot and heavy in high school, their relationship fuelled by passion. Passion that lead to a marriage at eighteen quickly followed by a complete implosion of their lives. Maggie and Canaan experienced more than their fair share of tragedy and unfortunately, Canaan turned his grief and anger toward self-destruction via fighting and drinking. The impact of his actions on his relationship with Maggie created the need for physical and metaphorical distance, with Maggie leaving the only home she has ever known to seek a new life.

Returning to her hometown five years later under sad circumstances bring Maggie and Canaan face to face for the first time since their fateful goodbye. Canaan has used their time apart to gain control of his inner demons, all while remaining hopeful of reconciling with Maggie. Now he only has to convince her that he is a changed man.

I adored Canaan, although it hurt to see his struggle during his time of grief, I really admired his determination to turn his life around. Although it did take losing Maggie to give him the push he needed to face his problems.

Despite their five year separation, it is obvious the spark that was always smouldering between Maggie and Canaan, is still alight. It doesn’t take much to make it flame higher, proving the love they share is long lasting.

Understandably, Maggie is wary of giving Canaan a second chance due to the level of pain his previous actions inflicted, especially as she couldn’t pinpoint the exact cause of the destruction in the past.

The revelations regarding the wreckage of their fledgling marriage will break your heart while witnessing the new foundation being laid between them and the changes Canaan has undertaken in their time apart will heal the wounds that have been inflicted.

Exes with Benefits mixes up the emotion, parts will make you cry, swoon and laugh out loud.
