This has been on my mind all weekend – you know the kind of thing where thoughts swirl round in your head just begging you to ramble on and on until you can get some sort of piece I guess this is what authors get when they have characters talking in their heads and just have to get their voices heard.
Anyway back to the point and please forgive me if I go off tangent as there is a lot going on up there lol. I have read a few books lately that have really got to me on a deeply personal level and I intend to write my reviews according to the points they raised for me.
I truly believe that reading is subjective no matter what age you are. Fiction is a form of escapism for me but it can also bring up issues that have happened to me and as such can be a very cathartic process when reading. How can you not project your life experience onto the story if you have been through a similar sort of thing. Maybe the story is expressed in such a way as to make you think about the things that have happened to you in an entirely different way or maybe it helps you come to terms with an ongoing issue and allows you to make decisions you would not have thought possible. OK I know I am rambling ( hence the feature name ) but this is exactly what has been happening to me lately.
I am also aware that as a reviewer there is a certain expectation to review on an objective basis. I am sure there are some people who can do this but I am not one of them lol. I do however, explain how a book affects me and offer what I hope are succinct points to enhance my point of view. For that is exactly what a review for me is My Personal Point of View.
Fortunately or unfortunately I have a lot of life experience (the unfortunate part is a lot of it is negative lol) but it does give me a unique perspective that others that may not have the same experience will not be able to pick up on certain aspects of a plot.
To be perfectly honest, I do not think anyone can offer 100% objectivity as certain things are bound to have personal significance and that’s what makes us the individuals we are. I do admire reviews that are analytical and articulate, one of my favourite people Sya at The Mountains of Instead has an amazing review style and I admire her very much.
So what is your opinion do you think that reviews should be more objective or like me that reading is purely subjective and reviews are a reflection of your own personal experiences.
